Three Dogs Abandoned at Styer Orchard

The owners spent two days rounding up and taking care of the loose dogs. One had to be put down, and the other two are available for adoption to the right families.

The owners of Styer Orchard in Langhorne had a few unexpected visitors earlier this week when three dogs were discovered on their property. According to Tim Field, all three were in bad shape, dirty and with no collars or tags. The first one caught appeared to have injured hind legs and was taken to the vet right away on Monday.

"His back legs were paralyzed," said Field. "The vet put him down an hour after we brought him over. It was the best thing to do for him."

Saddened by the first dog's misfortune, Field left the vet determined to help the other two and spent the next two days rounding the crafty canines up. He went through about a pound of ground beef trying to to attract the second dog, but everytime Field reached out to grab him, the dog ran away.

"I tried using woodchuck traps," said Field. "But he was too big and would just back out when it closed."

Finally, Field circled the dog several times with his truck before wearing him down long enough to grab it and place it in the cab. Field took the flea-ridden dog home and washed him up and clipped its very long nails.

Field was not able to rescue the third dog until Tuesday, when he found it by a woodpile on the property. Sadly, a night in the cold and wet weather took away much of the dog's energy and made it a little easier to capture, but not without a little bit of a price.

"I had some chicken to distract him," said Field. "When I grabbed him by the neck, he gave me a good bite on the hand."

Just as with the second dog, Field took his last guest home, cleaned him up and warmed him by the stove. He named the white, bichon mixes Falcor and Frosty and is now looking for good homes for the lost dogs.

Judging from the reaction on the Styer Orchard Facebook page, it should not take long to find new owners. Field's friend, Katie Murphy will take Falcor and Frosty to the vet on Saturday to get their shots and hold on to Frosty until a permanent home is found.

"A lot of customers have reached out," said Field. "We'll interview a few and make sure they get to good homes."

After seeing them run around the property, Field initially thought he would keep them together. However, since they have been captured and contained, Field has reconsidered that idea.

"They hate each other," said Field. "When they were loose, they seemed to get along. As soon as I put them together, they started fighting. Keeping them separated will probably make it easier to give them away. Not everybody is prepared to take home two dogs at once."
