Turnpike Chase Ends with Crash in New Jersey

Felony charges are pending for a York, Pa., man who allegedly attempted to flee Pennsylvania State Police during a traffic stop on the PA Turnpike last week.

According to the arrest record, Maurice Cory Nieves, 29, was pulled over after a state trooper clocked him driving his 2010 Mercedes Benz more than 110 miles per hour while traveling on the eastbound lanes of the turnpike.

Nieves pulled over for a traffic stop, but just as the trooper walked up to the car, Nieves stuck his head out the window and sped away and crossed the Delaware River Bridge into New Jersey, according to the report.

The trooper pursued Nieves into New Jersey, driving up to 120 miles per hour to stay on his tail, the report says. The report says that Nieves, drove onto the shoulder when he hit heavier traffic.

When he attempted to get off at the Florence exit, the report says, Nieves could not make the right turn and drove off the road and struck a tree, causing the front wheels and axle to sheer off. The SUV then rolled onto its left side, the report says, and Nieves climbed out of the passenger side and attempted to flee on foot.

The trooper managed to tag Nieves with his taser, according to the arrest report, but Nieves broke free while the trooper attempted to secure handcuffs. Nieves ran into the roadway, then gave himself up, the report says.

New Jersey State Police investigated the crash scene and said that Nieves was driving under the influence. Nieves faces a felony count of fleeing or eluding a police officer, a misdemeanor for driving under the influence and summary offenses for reckless driving and related charges.

An arrest warrant has not yet been filed.
