Limerick Gets $970,000 in Federal Funding for Trail Project

Great news for local trail lovers: Limerick is getting a nearly $1 million boost to help create a 4 mile trail network across the township.

LIMERICK, PA -- A local trail project is among 51 "alternative transportation" initiatives around the state that have received $33 million in federal funding, Governor Wolf's office announced on Tuesday.

β€œThese projects are important initiatives that enhance communities across Pennsylvania to create stronger economies and better infrastructure,” Governor Wolf said in a statement. β€œMaking these improvements will enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities, improve access to public transportation, create safe routes to school, preserve historic transportation structures, provide environmental mitigation, create trails that serve a transportation purpose, and promote safety and mobility.”

There were three projects that received funding in Montgomery County, including Limerick, one in Abington, another in Cheltenham.

Limerick will receive $970,00 to help construct the Limerick TAP Trail, a 2.57 mile off-road trail that will connect to existing trails. It will also create a 4.1 mile east-west network of trails across the length of the township, officials said.

The funding comes as a result of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, the 2012 federal transportation authorization act.
