Thefts Of Motorcycles, ATVs On The Rise In Montgomery County

As the weather warms, criminals have increasingly targeted motorcycles and ATVs.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Authorities in Montgomery County are warning local residents of a recent increase in the theft of ATVs, motorcycles, and other "powersport" vehicles.

Police said the thefts have come as the weather has gotten warmer and criminals have taken advantage of vehicles being left in easily accessible places.

"These thefts also often bring other problems like driving on sidewalks, groups of riders doing wheelies on interstates, and attempts to elude police at the expense of community safety," Lower Pottsgrove police sadi in a statement. "And, they often also include title washing investigations, counterfeit titles, re-vinned stolen vehicles, and identity theft investigations. Out of sight, out of mind."

Because these types of vehicles can also be easily ridden away, with little commotion — or at least easier than cars or trucks — they're being increasingly targeted.

Police urge owners to lock ATVs, motorcycles, mini-bikes, scooters, and dirt bikes, and to keep them out of sight of the public. Chains, with a floor anchor, are helpful as well but ideally they'll be kept safe inside a locked garage. Owners should also consider putting a GPS tag on their vehicle, as well.
