Western Center Discusses Signs for School

Committee continues sign discussion

The Joint Operating Committee continued discussing signage for the school property at Monday's monthly meeting.

The subject was tabled last month because Spring-Ford's representative Joseph Ciresi was absent, and he has been spearheading the research project on new signs. Committee chair William Scott said last month during the meeting that he didn't feel it would be fair to discuss it without Ciresi.

Ciresi said he feels the school definitely needs new signs.

"We need a sign whether it's lit or not lit," Ciresi said. "Those A-frame signs look terrible."

The committee has expressed a preference for lighted signs. The idea of a digital message sign has come up, but the board decided to go with regular signs and light them.

The committee is discussing three signs. Two already exist - the current sign on the corner of Sunset Road and Graterford Road, and the sign on the building above the restaurant.

The third would be at the driveway entrance to the school, on the Graterford Road side.

"Putting a sign at the top of the hill with the events going on wouldn't be a bad idea," Scott said.

Several residents who live in the vicinity of the school came to the meeting to voice their opinions. Two of the residents said they were pleased that the board decided to pass on a digital sign and use a regular sign. Resident John Swarr, who lives directly opposite the front of the school, said he planned to object if the board decided to place a lighted sign at the driveway.

The board will be looking for more information on the signs and will not be making any decisions yet.

Ciresi publicly thanked local business owner Gail Wellington, the owner of , has partnered with the school's horticulture classes to restore a local arboretum. The arboretum is located at the .

"Spring-Ford has to help with the restoration," Ciresi said.
