Funeral Procession For Fallen Philly Cop: Montco Road Closures

LOWER MORELAND, PA — A funeral procession will be held this week to memorialize the life of a local police officer killed in the line of duty.

The procession for Philadelphia Police Officer Richard Mendez will pass through Montgomery County and will include road closures in Lower Moreland Township.

The Tuesday afternoon closure will impact Byberry Road between Pine Rd and Philmont Avenue from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Motorists are advised to plan for delays.

Mendez was shot four times during an Oct. 12 car burglary at the airport's parking garage D. The shooting happened when Mendez and Officer Raul Ortiz reported for duty and encountered several men breaking into a vehicle.

Funeral services for Mendez will be held on Tuesday at Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and Paul in Center City's Logan Square neighborhood. Words of remembrance begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon funeral mass.

Interment will immediately follow the funeral at Forest Hills Cemetery in Huntingdon Valley.
