MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — An Eagleville man admitted in federal court Wednesday that he sent threatening messages to the Montgomery County Democratic office building in Norristown last January.

Anthony Nero, 48, pleaded guilty to charges of sending threatening communications and cyberstalking before U.S. District Court Judge Karen S. Marston.

Nero had sent an email on Jan. 7, 2021, to the Montgomery County Democratic Party that threatened "random acts of violence" and stated "you should probably beef up security," according to court records.

The following month, Nero reportedly admitted to Norristown Police that he was also responsible for shooting a .45 caliber handgun three times at the county Democratic office building.

Nero was initially arrested by Norristown Police and faced various state charges, but county prosecutors subsequently withdrew those charges and Nero was instead charged by federal authorities.

"In the midst of a politically tumultuous time in our Nation, Anthony Nero sent a threatening communication and then turned those words into a violent act that could have resulted in catastrophic injury, or worse," U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams said in a statement. "I want to thank our partners in the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and all agencies at the federal, state and local levels for their dedicated work on this case."

According to prosecutors, ballistics tests by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau confirmed that two spent bullet casings recovered from the Democratic offices were fired by Nero's .45 caliber pistol.

Nero remains in federal custody pending sentencing.
