Election 2023: Joan DeRosa For Neshaminy School Board

Candidates running in the May 16 primary election are providing background about themselves and their positions on the issues to voters in these profiles, which will run in Patch individually for each candidate.
LOWER SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA —Joan DeRosa is running as a Democrat for a Region 1 seat on the Neshaminy School Board in the May 16 primary election.
DeRosa is seeking one of two, four-year terms along with Wendy Flanigan and school board members Tina Hollenbach, the school board president, and Carlos Rodriguez.

All have cross-filed and will appear on the Democratic and Republican ballots, except DeRosa, who will only appear on the Democratic ticket.

- What are the top issues currently facing your position and how do you plan to address them?
The budget issue and the district's operating expense. There needs to be more transparency with how the taxpayers' monies are being spent and how can we better budget the monies so taxes are not increased.
2. Identify specific goals or ideas you have to enhance life in your position:
More accountability to ensure our students are prepared for their future success in life after high school. Adding credit and financial literacy to the curriculum.
3. What in your experience or background prepares you for election to office?
My background in education provides me with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions for the Neshaminy schools.
I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics and my master’s degree is in math education, both from Temple University. I am a mathematics instructor for both Community College of Philadelphia and Bucks County Community College. I have been teaching mathematics for many years. I taught secondary mathematics at both Philadelphia and Bucks Country school districts before starting my career as a college professor.
At Community College of Philadelphia, I have taken a leadership role by coordinating the highest enrolled mathematics course for the college. I am responsible for the development of the course material used by all instructors.
I am very excited to be a candidate for the Neshaminy school board. My passion for education, love for teaching, and drive to make a difference in the lives of the residents in our community is present in everyday life.
