PA State House Malvern Area: Howard Leads Newman

Democratic Incumbent Kristine C. Howard garnered 56.4 percent of the votes, according to Department of State reports at 10:30 p.m.

MALVERN, PA —State Rep. Kristine Howard, a Democrat, garnered 56.04 percent of the votes against]Republican candidate Gail Newman for a seat representing District 167 in the state House.

The district covers Malvern borough, and portions of Charlestown, East Whiteland, West Pikeland, West Whiteland, Willistown townships.

The polls closed at 8 p.m.

Howard garnered 4,595 in-person votes and 728 mail-in votes, according to the Department of State reports.

Newman received 4,041 in-person votes and 135 mail-in votes.

The final unofficial results are not expected until Wednesday.

The district covers 73.7 square miles and has a population of 66,501.

The median age is 41 and the average income is $68,600 per capita, according to the U.S. census.

A single mother of seven, Howard is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers Law School, according to her biography on the state website.

She previously worked for the Chester County Department of Children and Youth Services investigating child abuse.

Newman is a Malvern Republican committee woman and a small business owner of a medical device business, according to her website.

She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a dental hygiene associate degree, and from Temple University Fox School of Business with a degree in economics and a master of business education.
