Newtown Police: No More DUI Volunteers

The department received an overwhelming response days after requesting volunteers to get drunk for a DUI training session.

The Newtown Police Department made the call, and the people responded.

Days after the department posted an unusual request on its Facebook for local residents to volunteer for a field sobriety training session, the 20 spots filled up almost instantly.

“We would like to thank everybody for their support and willingness to participate in the upcoming training exercises in May,” a representive posted on the department’s Facebook page Wednesday. “We have received an overwhelming amount of responses and have forwarded those to the agency in charge of training. At this time we are no longer accepting further applications. Again, we truly appreciate the response from those willing to help keep our community and the surrounding communities a safer place.”

According to the original request, the 20 volunteers will be given alcohol and food while officers monitor the levels of intoxication. At certain points, the volunteers will be asked to perform three field sobriety coordination tests.

The session will be held at the BPG Conference Center in Newtown Square from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 6 and 7.
