The fire company referred to the post as "ill-mannered remarks"
"The remarks made were personal in nature and were not an official statement, nor represents the views of this Fire Company," the fire company said.
"The Prospect Park Fire Company does not condone this type of behavior by our members or our leadership" said Chairman Joe Magee. "We are deeply saddened by Chief Simmonds comments and agreed that it would be best if he stepped down in his role as Chief."
Simmonds took to social media to apologize for the post, saying he was "extremely remorseful" for his actions and that "an attempted assassination of a former US President is no laughing matter.
The board appointed the Assistant Fire Chief to fill the role of Fire Chief for the remainder of the term.
It also urged donations via GoFundMe to the family of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who died in the shooting.
"The man is a true hero and was a dedicated member of the fire service," the board said. "The Board of Trustees encourages all to donate to the Comperatore family GoFundMe page."
