Potential Airline Merger Threatens Pittsburgh International Jobs

If the US Airways and American Airlines merger announced last month goes through, local airport officials fear job duplication could lead to job losses at Pittsburgh International Airport.

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports that Allegheny County Airport Authority officials are working to prevent the loss of about 1,200 jobs at US Airways' flight operations center in Moon and at the maintenance base in Findlay.

The CEOs of US Airways and American Airlines reassured a Senate panel Tuesday that their merger would not lead to fewer flights or lost jobs, but the $11 billion merger would create the world’s biggest airline and provide more competition for United and Delta, according to the Washington Post reports.

The Pittsburgh Business Times reports that Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton emphasized during a meeting with US Airways CEO Douglas Parker the importance of maintaining jobs in the state and ensuring Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have sufficient direct flights to attract businesses and travelers.
