Firefighters Rescue Man Overcome By Fumes Inside His Lambertville Apartment

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — Firefighters rescued a man overcome by carbon monoxide fumes inside his apartment early Friday morning at the Spring Brook Arms on Route 165 in the city.

The City of Lambertville Fire District No. 1 responded to the scene just before 2 a.m. for the smell of gas. Within minutes, the on duty crew arrived and performed an investigation. It was quickly determined that the cause of the smell was from a generator that had been placed inside a commercial structure below the apartments and was filling the complex with poisonous carbon monoxide fumes.

Firefighters reported that the initial meter reading was 300 ppm at the door on ground level, and rapidly increased as they entered the structure.

The building was quickly evacuated of its occupants, including a man who was found semi-conscious but disoriented in his apartment. While firefighters pulled him to safety, the man lost consciousness. He was transferred to awaiting EMS personnel for care.

After thoroughly searching the building with no other victims found, the firefighters shifted their attention to securing the source of the fumes and ventilating the structure.

Three people were treated with one man transported to Doylestown Hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning. He was later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center due to the severity of his injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the city of Lambertville Fire Marshal, Lambertville Police, Hunterdon County Board of Health, as well as the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office.

Assisting the City of Lambertville Fire Department were its mutual aid partners from the West Amwell Fire Company, New Hope Eagle Fire Company, and the Lambertville- New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad.
