NEW HOPE, PA — The New Hope-Solebury Middle School has been named a Don Eichhorn Schools: School to Watch in recognition of its academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures and processes.

Developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform and in partnership with the Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education (PAMLE), Kutztown University, and the Horace Mann Service Corporation, the school is one of only three Pennsylvania middle schools earning the recognition, joining a total of 38 schools in state with active designation.

“This recognition is a testament to our middle school’s dedication to fostering an educational environment where all students can thrive,” shared Dr. Charles Lentz, New Hope-Solebury School District superintendent. “Earning this prestigious designation showcases our Lion spirit of innovation, transformation, and continual growth and as well as strongly positioned us as an educational leader among middle schools.”

In addition, NHSD Middle School was recognized for strong leadership, collaborative faculty members focused on continuous curriculum and instruction enhancement, and a commitment to assessment and accountability to bring about continuous improvement.

“This rigorous and comprehensive process has been an incredible opportunity for our team to showcase the qualities that make us an elite middle school, while also identifying areas where we can continue to grow,” says Dr. Erik Pedersen, principal of New Hope-Solebury Middle School. “By taking a deep dive into our practices and policies, we’ve implemented evidence-based enhancements designed to elevate the student experience. For example, the addition of a 22-minute advisory period ensures that every student starts their day in a supportive, small-group environment, fostering connections and a sense of belonging."

He continued, "Additionally, our innovative curricular models, including our performing arts and STEAM opportunities, provide students with dynamic, creative pathways to explore their passions. Our interventions and enrichment programs are thoughtfully developed to ensure every student is supported in a fully inclusive environment, reflecting our commitment to both excellence and equity.”

The Schools to Watch selection process involves a rigorous application where schools must meet criteria set by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. Those meeting the criteria undergo a state team visit to observe classrooms, review achievement data, and interview stakeholders. Recognition is granted for three years, after which schools must reapply, demonstrating growth and continued alignment with STW standards. This re-designation process ensures schools are consistently improving and maintaining excellence.

“We are excited to continue to build upon the great work that we’ve set into motion,” continued Dr. Pedersen. “Just as learning never ends, either will our commitment to providing our students with an exceptional academic experience.”
