Winners Of Emerging Playwrights Contest Announced By Phillips' Mill

NEW HOPE, PA — The Phillips' Mill Community Association has announced the winners of its 2025 Emerging Playwright Competition.

They are Kevin Brofsky of New York, N.Y., for “Last Dance” set in Fire Island in 2014; Lisa DeAngelis of Doylestown for “Easter Island,” about an aging couple remembering family holidays from different perspectives; Jim Lindheim of New York, N.Y., for “Guess Who’s Coming to Cocktails,” when an AI guest adds spice to a family cocktail hour; Patricia Lynn of Roosevelt Island, N.Y., for “The Untitled Spinster,” which finds two lonely romantics in front of an art gallery portrait; John McDonnell of Doylestown for “Echo and Narcissus,” a comedic take on a Greek myth; and Domenick Scudera of Collegeville, for “The Second Original Sin” in which Eve receives unsettling news after eating from the Tree of Knowledge.

Among the winners are John McDonnell of Doylestown and Lisa DeAngelis of Doylestown.

In its 8th year, this unique competition invites both novice and experienced playwrights to submit original, unpublished one-act plays for a blind judging by a jury and encourages the development of original new works for the stage. To participate, playwrights must be 18 years or older and live within a 100-mile radius of the Mill. The first 50 works submitted are accepted for review, with up to six winners selected by a panel of jurors.

Jurors of this year’s competition were Judith Hallberg, Dr. Glenn Steinberg, and Dr. Wilbert Turner. The winning plays will be read by actors before a live audience at a staged reading at the historic Mill on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. After the readings, playwrights will receive feedback from the audience during a “talk back” conversation. An informal wine and cheese reception will also give guests the chance to chat with the playwrights, actors and jurors.

The evening is infused with the excitement of new work and a shared creative energy. While there is no admission fee, donations are gratefully accepted.
