The Birches debuts Memory Café; first in Newtown
Marketing Director Betsy Szamboti describes the Memory Café as a place of joy, community and connection.

As families navigate the complexities of dementia, The Birches at Newtown is hoping that its Memory Café program will provide opportunities for them to connect with their loved ones in meaningful ways.
Marketing Director Betsy Szamboti describes the Memory Café as a place of joy, community and connection. It is the first program of its kind in Newtown, which meets once a month at The Birches for an hour. A free activity is provided to all those who wish to participate.
On Tuesday, July 15, from 2:00-3:00 p.m., individuals with cognitive changes and their family caregivers can engage in watercolor painting. All supplies are provided at no additional cost.

“People with dementia, their hearts are active. It’s their brain that’s breaking,” Szamboti said. “They want to be a part of their community; we are the ones who have to adapt to meet their needs.”
Creative activities like painting have profound benefits, offering a meditative experience that can help ease the mind and calm the spirit.

Szamboti, who is also a certified dementia practitioner, said, “Painting allows someone with dementia to express their emotions that may be difficult to verbalize due to brain changes.”
As the disease progresses, it can be difficult for family caregivers to figure out how to make the day meaningful. Activities that engage both the body and mind are crucial. The Birches’ Memory Café also helps family care providers connect with their loved ones.
Szamboti said, “During Memory Café, family caregivers can be in the moment with their loved one. They can let their guard down a bit to be the adult child creating a memory with their parent.”
Registration for Memory Café is required. To attend, call 267-291-3902 or email bszamboti@thebirchesatnewtown.com.
