Bucks Co. Lawmaker's 'Love Is Love Day' Proposal Shot Down

Sen. Santarsiero made an impassioned plea for acceptance after his resolution for "Love is Love Day" didn't make it to the floor.

NEWTOWN, PA — A State Senator from Bucks County who proposed to designate the day after Valentine's Day as "Love is Love Day" in Pennsylvania in support of local LGBTQ+ youth made an impassioned plea for acceptance after his resolution didn't make it to the floor.

Senator Steve Santarsiero, who introduced a resolution in Harrisburg calling on Pennsylvania lawmakers to make Feb. 15 “Love is Love Day," made his comments Wednesday.

Santarsiero's resolution was aimed to be in celebration of a prom that the Rainbow Room in Doylestown will be hosting on Feb. 15th. However, it didn't make it to the floor.

"We were unable to receive unanimous consent from our Republican colleagues," Santarsiero said in a statement.

"It is not okay that in Pennsylvania, in the year 2020, it is still perfectly legal to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ+ community. We should all be ashamed of that, and actively fight to make our Commonwealth an inclusive place for all residents, especially our children," he said in a statement.

Santarsiero said adolescence is tough and for LGBTQ+ youth, it's "even more difficult, even dangerous,"Santarsiero said. "However, there are always beacons of hope."

The Rainbow Room in Doylestown as one of those beacons, Santarsiero said. "For many young people in my district, the Rainbow Room is quite literally a life-saver," he said.

Santarsiero represents Pennsylvania's 10th District, including the communities of Doylestown, Newtown, Yardley, Buckingham, Chalfont, Upper Makefield, Tullytown, Solebury, Morrisville and more.
