FBI Releases Findings On PA Woman's Mysterious Resort Death

Tainted alcohol is not to blame for the death of a Pennsylvania tourist in the Dominican Republic, U.S. officials said this week.

Five months after the sudden death of a Pennsylvania woman at a Dominican Republic resort, federal authorities determined she died of natural causes.

Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, of Allentown was found dead at the Grand Bahia Príncipe Hotel on May 25. She was visiting the Dominican Republic resort to celebrate her anniversary with her husband but died suddenly while having a drink, her family told CBS News.

Jay McDonald, a family spokesman for Schaup-Werner, told ABC News Schaup-Werner began experiencing physical distress after having a drink from the mini-bar in her room on the day of her arrival. She did not have prior health issues, McDonald said.

Five days later, two Maryland residents were found deceased in their hotel room at the same resort.

The deaths sparked an investigation, and widespread speculation they may have been caused by tainted alcohol. However, the FBI has ruled out tainted alcohol as a cause for all three deaths, the New York Times reported.

Dominican authorities determined Schaup-Werner died of a heart attack and the Maryland couple, Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, died of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, NBC reported.
