The historic Newtown Theatre will present “Ronstadt Revue” on Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m. This Linda Ronstadt tribute band features singer Gesenia and her six-piece band, who faithfully recreate selections from all phases of Ronstadt’s award-winning career, from country and rock through Mexican/mariachi and songs from her three Great American Songbook album with Nelson Riddle.

“Our show isn’t a typical tribute show,” Gesenia says. “There are no gimmicks involved. I’m not imitating Linda or trying to replace her in anyway. This show is a truly a celebration of Linda’s music.”

Ronstadt retired in 2011 due to a rare brain disorder called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which causes problems with movement and speech. Gesenia says Ronstadt Revue is meant to showcase Ronstadt’s music both in English and Spanish, but also to educate the audience about who she is and the types of music that influenced her and shaped her career.

“I want people to know that Linda was more than the Queen of Rock…she crossed a multitude of genres of music and succeeded,” Gesenia says. “Linda’s biggest non-English album was her first Mariachi album where she had to fight her label and management to record it because they thought it would ruin her career if she sang in Spanish. Money, fame…all of those other things weren’t her main goal. She had to sing.”

At 7:30 p.m. on the night prior to the concert, Thursday, March 31, the Newtown Theatre will screen “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.” This 2019 documentary traces Ronstadt’s life and career – from her childhood in Tucson through her decades-long career to her retirement. The documentary features Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Aaron Neville, Don Henley, and more. Tickets are available at the box office on the night of the movie.
