The historic Newtown Theatre’s monthly “Friday Night Jazz” series will welcome Philadelphia-based composer and saxophonist Jack Saint Clair and his six-piece ensemble on Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. Saint Clair will perform a themed show titled “Jazz Goes to the Movies,” featuring popular movie music arranged for a jazz ensemble.
“A lot of jazz standards are from movies, so I thought it would be fun to play some classic movie music in a classic theatre,” Saint Clair says. “The Bad and the Beautiful theme…As Times Goes By from Casablanca…the theme from Third Man. The music in the Hollywood classics was so great.”

Saint Clair has performed throughout the Philadelphia region. He was the Director’s Choice Winner of the 2018-2019 David P. and Susan W. Wohlheuter Jazz Ensemble Composition Contest and has received commissions to write music for the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Temple University Jazz Orchestra, the Dutch Concert Big Band, and the Philly POPS.
“My music is influenced by big bands,” Saint Clair says. “I’ve written a lot of big band music, and I play in a big band. In my compositions, I like to have the horns play off one another, chase each other, duel each other. That kind of comradery and back and forth among instruments has always appealed to me.”
