NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown Athletic Club is currently planning to reopen its facility on June 15. The reopening will come despite coronavirus mitigation measures that do not permit gyms from operating.

Linda Mitchell, the club's spokeswoman, said if the governor provided details on a reasonable reopening date, the NAC would wait.

"But now we have no indication of his plan," Mitchell said, adding the NAC is hoping to hear more this week about when restrictions will be lifted for gyms. "If not, we will open on the 15th," she said.

The Newtown Township facility over the weekend opened its outdoor pool and resort. Some changes are in place, including the suspension of towel service and pool tubes.

The NAC has been shut since mid-March due to the pandemic. It joins a growing list of area businesses expressing frustration in the reopening timelines for some sectors. Another local gym, Transcend Fitness in Wrightstown Township, opened last month in defiance of the governor's order.
