NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown Mercantile Group is hosting a State Street Reopening Block Party this Saturday and Sunday. During the two-day event, a portion of the road will be closed to traffic so businesses can host on-street sidewalk sales and dining.

Will the weather cooperate?

As of Friday afternoon, the forecast is calling for a chance of thunderstorms both nights so check for the latest weather report before heading out. On Saturday, the National Weather Service said there is a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. On Sunday, there's a 30 precent chance of thunderstorms before 8 p.m.

Here are the event details:

On Saturday, State Street will be closed from Centre Avenue to Penn Street. Then, on Sunday State Street will be closed from Centre to Washington avenues as vendors and restaurants take to the streets. The event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. both evenings.

Attendees are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing whenever possible.

The event is intended to encourage shoppers and diners to return to the town's businesses hub following nearly three months of coronavirus shutdown orders.
