Newtown Police Investigating Stolen Checks

The mailed checks were dropped off at the outdoor mail collection box at the Newtown Post Office before falling into the wrong hands.

NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department is investigating several reports of people who dropped off mailed checks at the mail collection box at the Newtown Post Office only to have them turn up stolen and forged.

On Nov. 21, police investigated a report of U.S. mail found open, torn and discarded near the post office at 20 Terry Drive.

Since then, police have received several reports of victims whose stolen and forged checks that were initially dropped at the mail collection box were later found to have been altered and deposited into various bank accounts in Philadelphia, the Paterson, New Jersey area and the Bronx, police said.
