The historic Newtown Theatre’s monthly “Friday Night Jazz” series will welcome composer and keyboardist Micah Graves on Friday, April 8 at 8 p.m.

NPR recently listed the 23-year-old Graves as a “new artist to watch” and he has taken the Philadelphia jazz and music scene by storm. He has released three impressive projects in less than a year, including his sublime, genre-blending record Pawns.

“I started classical piano lessons around age 13,” Graves says. “When I was 16, I went to a Jeff Lorber concert, he’s a jazz musician. I was like, ‘What kind of music is this?!’ I had never heard anything like it, but I knew how it made me feel. It was like a breath of fresh air. I thought it was a lot better than Bach!”

In 2022, Graves’ discography is slated to double. Two of his new works will feature original compositions and his other project will pay homage to jazz standards. His 2020 album, Med Nama, is a kaleidoscopic set of unruly compositions filled with blazing fusion grooves, jazz tradition, R&R poise, and unclouded pop lyricism.

“The best way to describe my music is ‘fusion’…it encompasses everything I grew up listening to,” Graves explains. “It’s jazz because of the harmony and form. There’s an element of gospel because my dad was a pastor. There’s some folk because I love folk music with a passion, which influences my lyrics.”

Graves says that people who come to his concert should expect energy, honesty, and a good time.

“Try me out because there is something for everyone – it’s jazz, a little bit of folk, some R&B,” he says. “You’ll definitely get some jazz elements, but maybe instead of a swing beat you’ll get a straight-up rock groove or a fusion groove. If you are a jazz purist or hate jazz or if you’re somewhere in between and want to hear something different, come to my concert!”

Tickets are available at TheNewtownTheatre.com for $25 per person or $20 for theatre members. Any remaining tickets will be sold for $35 at the door on the night of the show (if available). All seating is general admission.

Beer, wine, and canned cocktails will be available for purchase at the theatre before the show and during intermission.

The theatre is located at 120 N. State Street in Newtown Borough. For the latest news about the Newtown Theatre visit TheNewtownTheatre.com.
