NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — The historic Centre Avenue Bridge will be closed for three weeks as crews replace the pedestrian walkway across the span.

The bridge will remain closed to all traffic 24/7 until the work is completed. Traffic is being detoured to the nearby Washington Avenue, Jefferson Street, and Barclay Street bridges until the work is completed and the bridge is reopened.

During the first phase of the project - a two-week closure in November - PennDOT repaired the buckled south wall, which was damaged in August when a car struck the wall, and repointed the historic masonry structure.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather-dependent.

The double-arch stone Centre Avenue bridge was built in 1796 when John Adams was President of the United States and Thomas Jefferson was vice president.
