UPPER MAKEFIELD, PA — Energy Transfer, which operates a 14-inch pipeline that carries refined product through the township, is investigating a potential leak in the Glenwood Drive neighborhood.

After a number of wells tested positive for kerosene, Energy Transfer and the Department of Environmental Protection last week launched an investigation into concerns about a potential hydrocarbon release in the area.

“Because of the proximity of our pipeline, we immediately began working with the DEP to investigate,” said Joseph Massaro, Lead Specialist, Public Affairs with Energy Transfer.

“Our operations team has taken a number of actions to assess the possibility of a pipeline issue,” said Massaro, including: shutting down the pipeline, performing a pressure test on the pipeline, probing the pipeline right-of-way for any sign of a release, performing two investigative digs along the pipeline right-of-way for any sign of a product release and sampling of residential water wells in the neighborhood.

“During this process, on Friday afternoon we discovered product loss from our pipeline. The pipeline was inactive at the time,” said Massaro. “Our third-party sampling is ongoing and we continue to work with residents in the Glenwood neighborhood to share those results as they come in.”
