NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — An underground electrical fire knocked out power to portions of downtown State Street over the weekend closing shops and restaurants from Greene Street to midway between Washington and Centre.

The Newtown Borough Police Department confirmed the outage over the weekend and said it stemmed from a problem with underground power lines. “PECO is aware of the problem and is working on the issue,” police reported.

Some of the 23 customers impacted by the outage included the Newtown Bike Shop, Countryside Gallery and Custom Frame Design, Ned’s Cigar Shop, Second Sin Taphouse, Calm Waters Coffee Roasters, and the Temperance House, which was making the best of a bad situation by selling candlelight cocktails.

Second Sin Brewing posted, “The businesses in Historic Newtown are keeping it extra historic this weekend. @secondsinnewtown is closed once again due to an ongoing power outage. We hope to be open on 2/5/25 if @pecoconnect restores power by then.”
