MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Madeleine Dean is the projected winner of Pennsylvania's 4th Congressional District race, the Associated Press reports. It's her fourth consecutive win.

While challenger Henry Winkler made some gains over Republicans in past years, the final result was not close, with Dean holding a huge 57,000 vote advantage in the solidly blue county with about three fourths of all of the district's precincts reporting.

While Dean looks almost assured of victory, Winkler has made some gains in the district, and now has about two more percentage points than Dean's Republican challenger did in 2022.

"Win or lose, I was able to accomplish this with less than 100k against a Candidate with 1.8 million," Winkler said Tuesday night. "I will gear up for 2026 if I lose and now have cemented numbers to gain the help of the RNC, NRCC, and the PAGOP."

11:16 p.m.

Dean's lead continues to grow with about 63 percent of precincts in Montgomery County now reporting.

Percentage wise, Dean's current lead is almost identical to the total she won the district by in 2022, which was 224,799 to 141,986.

Dean's lead has increased by some 16,000 votes in the past 25 minutes as it appears she is pulling away from Winkler.

10:30 p.m.

While Winkler is seeing an influx of in-person ballots, he has still lost about 2,000 votes of ground on Dean in the past 30 minutes. Winkler's optimism remained high late Tuesday.

"I have pulled closer, no Candidate in the last 3 cycles has been this close to knocking out Dean, it will come down to in person voting in Montgomery County," he wrote. "Lets goooo."

Dean said she visited 14 different polling places in Montgomery County on Tuesday.

"Civic engagement is the hallmark of our democracy," she shared.

10:06 p.m.

Winkler has regained about 7,000 votes from Dean in the past 45 minutes of tallying, though the incumbent Congresswoman still holds a commanding lead. Dean now leads, 71,265 to 44,544.

9:39 p.m.

Winkler said that he remains hopeful the current deficit will be made up once the in-person ballots are tallied.

"So Dean is relying heavy on Mail In advantage, I expect that we will pull close once in person Montgomery County PA is counted. I'm still in striking distance with 34k," he said.

Winkler expressed confidence in the GOP vote turnout in Montgomery County.

"Giant surge of Men showing up to the polls in Montgomery County PA, Men might save America from Kamala and Dean," he said on X. "We are seeing great numbers in Montgomery County & we could possibly flip the District."

8:40 p.m.

As the Democratic lead grows as expected in Pennsylvania with the early mail-in vote tabulation, it's important to note that this will dwindle significantly in the coming hours. Montgomery County elections chief Neil Makhija said Tuesday that Republican candidates would likely steadily make up ground up until midnight, when in-person balloting is likely to be complete.

Mail-in balloting will be about two thirds finished in most of the state by midnight, officials estimate.

The incumbent

Dean has held the seat since she was first elected in 2019, and has slowly built something of a national profile in that time. Following the Jan. 6 insurrection in 2021, she was named the impeachment manager of the Bipartisan Task Force in charge of investigating former President Trump.

Dean's campaign has largely ignored Winkler, and focused most of their time and public appearances on campaigning for the Democratic ticket at large, particularly Vice President Kamala Harris and Sen. Bob Casey. Both are in races that project to be far tighter than Dean's.

Her challenger

Winkler, of Elkins Park, is a U.S. Marine, former police officer in Tennessee, and CEO and President of Wings for Warriors, a veterans nonprofit.

Winkler has gone on the offensive, attacking Dean after her recent appearance with Sen. Elizabeth Warren in Montgomery County where the pair discussed the impacts of inflation.

He's also zeroed in on Dean's family alleged ties to sweatshops in Taiwan and corrupt business practices.

The district

The 4th district covers most of Montgomery County, the state's third most populous county after Philadelphia and Allegheny.

The district does not exactly run along county lines, however, A small sliver of the northeastern part of the county is part of the 1st District, which also covers all of neighboring Bucks County.

Recent results

While polling in the district is limited, The Hill gives Dean a 99 percent chance of winning. In 2022, she defeated Republican businessman Christian Nascimento by nearly 90,000 votes, more than her 83,000 vote margin over Kathy Barnette in 2020.
