North Allegheny Student Earns Award at Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair

Three students in the region were awarded during the 74th annual event at the Carnegie Science Center.

A North Allegheny High School senior was recently honored with an award from the Allegheny County Health Department for outstanding projects.

Piyusha Sane was recognized at the 74th annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair held in April at the Carnegie Science Center.

The health department, in its 22nd year as an award sponsor, recognized Piyusha for her project called “Reducing CO2 Emissions” in the air quality category. Her teacher is Bruce Allen.

The purpose of her research is to acknowledge the effects of carbon dioxide on the environment and use an acid-base reaction to filter the CO2.

"I think the CO2 emissions can be reduced by using different hydroxides to react with the gas to enhance the air quality," Piyusha wrote about her experiment.

Two other students recognized included Lyta Nicoll, a sixth-grader at Montessori Centre Academy in Shaler, and William Hebda, a seventh grader at Queen of Angels School in North Huntingdon.
