Should North Allegheny Shorten Its School Year to Save Money?
The idea was one of several discussed prior to the board's passage of a new budget.
Prior to approving a new budget for the 2013-2014 school year, the North Allegheny School Board held a brief discussion on a number of money-saving ideas, including shortening the school year from 184 to 180 days.
No conclusions were reached with board President Maureen Grosheider clearly against the idea while board member Ralph Pagone suggested it might be worthy of more study. (see video).
Pagone first brought up the idea back in January, when the board was considering whether or not to close Peebles Elementary School, a decision which has been put on hold for the time being.Â
Pagone said the shorter school year proposal was just one of several ideas he received from current and former school district staff and teachers, parents, and other community members concerned about the proposal to close Peebles.Â
Board member Karen Boujouko initiated the discussion, saying it was "long overdue." She was not a member of the board in January when Pagone first asked the board to consider other revenue raising ideas.
