Work is continuing on the shop at 994 Perry Highway in Perrysville, and an opening date for Madison Avenue Specialty Cakes has been pushed back to November, said its owner, Nancy Becker.

Becker and her husband, Paul, leased the 750-square-foot space earlier this summer to open the specialty shop, where she will take custom cake orders and offer cupcakes, cookies and bagged treats for immediate purchase.

Becker said they are working with Ross Township to meet building code requirements with the ovens. In the meantime, she is taking orders on her website, www.madisonavecakes.com

Becker began backing cakes after she was laid off in 2008 as a project designer for an architectural firm in Pittsburgh.

In 2010, she competed again and won for the best overall amateur-decorated cake. This year, her cake won People's Choice for best-decorated cake and best overall professional-decorated cake.
