Sinkhole Shuts Down Perry Highway (Again)

The street was closed for five days last week after heavy rains washed out sewer repairs and damaged a water main.

For the second time in less than a week, Perry Highway is closed between West View Park Drive and Center Avenue in West View.

A sinkhole formed in the far-right northbound lanes after a heavy thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon.

"Crews have been trying to repair the connection between a drain pipe and a culvert underneath the road," said West View Police Lt. Matt Holland. "The rains sent so much water into that pipe, it started washing away the dirt and fill underneath the spot that was just repaired Monday."

This all started a week ago Wednesday, when crews began to repair a sewer directly across the street from Dunkin Donuts, and directly above the damaged culvert. Heavy rains Wednesday night not only washed away the sewer repair, but also damaged a 10-inch water pipe, forcing a five-day closure.

The road had just reopened Monday night.

After Tuesday's rain, workers noticed the recently repaired roadway started to buckle, and they immediately closed it down.

Holland said it's too early to say what damage occurred, or how long until Perry Highway can reopen.

"It feels like a scene out of the movie 'Groundhog Day," Holland said with a wry smile. "Hopefully this won't last much longer."
