Teen Agrees to Deal After Setting off Homemade Bombs in West View

The 18-year-old will attend anger management classes and be charged with only a summary criminal mischief offense.

Prosecutors dropped all serious charges Wednesday against 18-year-old Austin Simmons, who was accused of making and setting off small bombs in the woods behind Frankfort Avenue in West View Sept. 22.

The deal reached with Simmons' attorney requires Simmons to attend anger management classes and to get a drug and alcohol evaluation.

In exchange, two felony charges — causing or risking catastrophe and criminal conspiracy — and three misdemeanor offenses — recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and corruption of minors — were dropped by prosecutors moments before Wednesday's hearing in the matter.

The tires of eight vehicles along Center Avenue and Oakwood and Richland Avenues were also found slashed that same night. The two 17-year-olds faced charges of criminal mischief to vehicles for the damage, and are being processed through juvenile court.

Police did not release the names of the juveniles. The names of minors involved in criminal cases and the disposition of those cases are not typically public record, according to state law.
