West View Sinkhole Update: Perry Highway May Open Late Wednesday

Contractors and West View Police are hoping to declare independence from a troublesome sinkhole on Perry Highway by the Fourth of July.

"If all goes according to plan, we hope to have the road reopened late Wednesday," said West View Police Lt. Matt Holland. "The crews got a lot done Saturday and finished repairs to the drain pipe underneath the hole."

Perry Highway has been closed between West View Park Drive and Center Avenue for two weeks. Crews are now slowly backfilling the hole, compressing each layer of as they go. (see video).

"The weather has not been on our side," said Holland. "One of those heavy rains two weeks back washed away 50 tons of gravel and put us back to square one."

The detour around the hole is a short one and Holland says there have been few complaints. However, the hole sits right in front of Grotto Bar and Grille, which has been shut down for two weeks.

"The owner has been incredibly patient," said Holland. "We really want to have him opened by the Fourth."
