Bank of America Drops Planned Debit Fee, Offers Free Museum Admisson to Cardholders

In an apparent effort to make nice with customers, Bank of America drops its plan for debit card fees and offers cardholders free area museum admission one weekend a month.

announced on Tuesday that it will dropped its plan to charge customers $5 a month to debit card holders who use it to make purchases.

News of the planned fee resulted in a backlash from the public, with many customers threatening to switch banks in protest. Other banks like Wells Fargo have also scrapped plans for a debit card charge, according to some reports.

On the heels of the scrapped fee announcement, the bank issued a release announcing that cardholders will be treated to free admission at several area museums this weekend as part of the bank's "Museums on Us" program.

According to the release, the offer is valid the first full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each month. Photo ID and a valid Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit card must be presented. The offer is good for one free general admission per cardholder at participating institution, excluding fundraising events, special exhibitions and ticketed shows. This deal cannot to be combined with other offers.
