Update: Man Burned at Folk Fest is Recovering

A Schwenksville firefighter suffered injuries while trying to light a hot water heater.

A member who suffered first- and second-degree burns in an incident at the Philadelphia Folk Festival Thursday is being treated at Lehigh Valley Hospital and said to be in "good spirits," according to Chief Jim Keyser.

Contrary to early reports, the burn victim, Paul Ensminger, suffered injuries while attempting to light a hot water heater at the company's food truck at the Folk Fest. He was not checking a propane tank, and has not suffered third-degree burns. He was also transported by ambulance to the hospital; he was not medevaced.

"A flash" came out of the heater when he was trying to light it, and Ensminger has a second-degree burn on his leg and first degree burns on his hands on face, Keyser said.

Ensminger may need a skin graft on his leg, but that determination will be made later today, Keyser said.

The chief didn't know when his fellow firefighter might be released, but said, "Knowing him, he’ll want to get out as soon as possible,” and back to the festival.
