District Court Closure Bringing Increased Caseload to Skippack Judge

Souderton, Telford and Franconia cases will be heard in Skippack in 2015.

Skippack District Judge Albert J. Augustine’s office will find increased workload in 2015, as nearby Judge Kenneth Deatelhauser will retire and his Souderton District Court will be closed, according to The Reporter

The closing is part of a realignment of eight district courts throughout Montgomery County, including Skippack’s District Court 38-1-24, which will now cover Souderton, Telford and Franconia, in addition to the municipalities of Lower Salford, Perkiomen, Skippack and Worcester, according to court records.

Telford Police Chief Randall Floyd objected to the plan in 2012, stating that it would be a nine-mile trek for officers to travel to Skippack.

“It would tie up my officers for a greater period of time,” Floyd said, according to the Souderton Independent. “We sometimes go to district court three, four times a day.”

Deatelhauser’s District Court 28-1-17 handles 4,772 cases, which is 33 percent less than the average total caseload and 21 percent less than the average caseload for similar courts around the county, according to the Reporter.
