Young children, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions or on certain medications are especially vulnerable to the excessive heat. Friends, relatives and neighbors are encouraged to check on those who are considered "at risk" during the Code Red.

Tips to "beat the heat" include wearing light-colored, loose fitting clothes, completing outdoor work during the morning (when temperatures won't be as high), and taking respite in air conditioned buildings or the shade.
