Sandy Sellers Copley Memorial 5K Run This Weekend

Beloved daughter, longtime hairdresser in Collegeville, lost her battle with cancer last year.

The following was provided by Charlotte Sellers, Sandra's mother:

I am starting the first-ever Sandy Sellers Copley Memorial 5K run, held along the on Saturday, June 25.

Sandy was a wonderful daughter, mother, hairdresser and runner. Sandy died on June 25, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 43. As her mother I don’t want anyone to forget my daughter, and I think a fitting memorial to Sandy would be a 5K run. She would have liked her name and energy connected to an annual event that would benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. All monies made from this 5K run will be donated to St. Jude, which was her favorite charity. She always said, “No child should ever have cancer."

She loved running and was herself planning to run a marathon when her leg swelled and we found out she had cancer. Her treatments and subsequent surgeries were going to cure her, so she could run again; we never thought she would die, Sandy agreed to have her right leg amputated in March 25 2010, in order to save her life.

I would like to think she is in heaven, now, running that marathon in golden sneakers!

My biggest desire is for no one to forget Sandy. Her name and her love of children would live on with this event every year.

Sandy was born and raised in Southampton; she graduated from William Tennent High School in 1985, and raised her own family for the past 18 years in Collegeville, where she worked as a hairdresser at the Hair Cuttery.

She has so many friends, in the area that still love her and have volunteered  to help with this first-ever memorial 5K. It starts at 9 a.m. along the Perkiomen Trail. Race begins and ends at Spring Mountain Resort, 757 Spring Mount Road, Schwenksville, PA 19473.

A poem:

My Sister the Fighter

by Robert Sellers

Cancer picked a fight with my sister.
But what cancer did not know was that my sister is a fighter.

She fought and fought cancer
And so cancer decided to start a war

Cancer started a war with my sister.
But what cancer did not know was that my sister is a warrior.

She battled and battled against cancer
And so cancer decided to go on a crusade.

Cancer went on a crusade against my sister.
But what cancer did not know and does not know and can never know

Is that my sister is an Angel.
And in that place where she now resides, not cancer nor any other torment
Can touch her ever again.
