2 Dead, 9 Hurt In Memorial Day Shooting In Philly's Fairmount Park

A group of eight adults and three juveniles were shot Monday night in Fairmount Park as they were heading home. Two died in the shooting.

PHILADELPHIA — Two people are dead and nine hurt in a mass shooting that erupted in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park on Memorial Day, according to police.

People who were in the park celebrating the holiday heard gunshots at about 10:27 p.m. Monday, police said. Nine of the 11 people shot were adults, and the others were juveniles, ages 15, 16, and 17, according to authorities.

Two adults were fatally shot. NBC10 identified the two people killed as Amya Devlin, 23, and Mikhail Bowers, 21.

Police said the other victims were 15 to 27 years old. All are in stable condition, Mayor Cherelle Parker said at a news conference Tuesday.

They all suffered gunshots to legs, arms, and heads, Action News reports.

Police said the victims were packing up their items for the day when they were shot.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said it's unclear if the victims were targeted.

Investigators found 21 spent shell casings from three firearms at the scene of the shooting, Parker said.

Authorities have not made any arrests or found any weapons used in the shooting.

"There are no excuses for this," Parker said Tuesday while battling back tears. "This was a heinous act of violence that was inhumane."

Parker said the city will not be held hostage by people who want "assault-like, wartime weaponry."

"There are no excuses for this," she said.
