PHILADELPHIA, PA — The National Weather Service has issued its initial snowfall estimates for a storm expected early next week in the Philadelphia region.

The initial forecast for the storm, which is expected to impact the Mid-Atlantic region late Sunday night through Monday, is for 4 to 6 inches of snow in the Philadelphia metro area, according to information released Friday afternoon by the National Weather Service.

However, some parts of the region can expected to get 6 to 8 plus inches.

Forecasters note there will be a "sharp northern gradient to the snowfall due to confluence and dry air off to the north, so some of these totals may be slightly too high."

The exact track and impact of the storm continues to develop. Further information will be available as the weather event nears.

In the short term, a dusting of snow is also possible Friday night. Less than a half inch is expected in the Philadelphia region.

Temperatures will remain cold, with overnight lows in the mid-20s.

Tonight: A chance of snow, mainly before 8 pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 24. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of flurries after 2 pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 32. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 20. West wind 10 to 15 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 33. West wind 10 to 15 mph.

Sunday Night: A chance of snow after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 23. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Monday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 30. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
