Man Dies After Leaping From Rt. 1 In Philadelphia

Pennsylvania State Police said a man who was trying to escape them jumped from U.S. Route 1 onto Germantown Avenue, causing fatal injuries.

PHILADELPHIA — A man died after jumping from an elevated road to the road below in Philadelphia as he tried to escape Pennsylvania State Police Monday, according to authorities.

State police said Matthew Michael Selvin, 33, of Philadelphia died after jumping from Roosevelt Boulevard/U.S. Route 1 onto Germantown Avenue Monday.

The incident began with a vehicle stop at mile marker 340.6 on Interstate 76 West in Philadelphia Monday.

State troopers stopped a silver Honda Civic for multiple traffic violations, but the Honda drove off, leading police on a chase that reached northbound Roosevelt Boulevard. That's where the Honda was stopped by police.

The driver, later identified as Selvin, ran off on foot in the southbound lanes of the boulevard, police said. Troopers did not chase him.

Authorities began searching for Selvin in the area, and found him on Germantown Avenue, under the boulevard, with significant injuries to his upper body, police said.

Philadelphia medics later pronounced him dead.

According to police, Selvin scaled the safety fence adjacent to the right lane of the boulevard and tried to jump to Germantown Avenue below.

Selvin's injuries were a result of the fall from the elevated expressway, authorities said.

The incident is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Skippack Station's Criminal Investigation Unit.
