Here are the top four stories today in Philadelphia:
- Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has signed an official order banning guns in recreation areas throughout the city. The announcement comes the day after the funeral of 41-year-old Tiffany Fletcher, a worker at the Mill Creek Rec Center who was gunned down while taking a break outside. There have been 18 gun-related incidents this year in recreation areas and city parks throughout Philadelphia. The executive order bans guns from all city recreation centers, including pools, parks, rec centers, and fields. (WPVI-TV)
- The mother of a Philadelphia care home resident who was found dead with a cleaning wipe stuck in her throat has filed a lawsuit over her daughter's death. Yewdall Cheryl, 50, had lived in the Philadelphia care home of Merakey-Woodhaven most of her life. She was severely disabled and required 24-hour care. She was found in a puddle of urine with a cleaning wipe lodged in her trachea and later died as a result. The lawsuit accuses the staff of the care home of gross negligence; Merakey-Woodhaven has denied any wrongdoing in the incident. (Daily Voice)
- Two teens have been arrested in connection with the carjacking of an Uber in West Philadelphia. The suspects are accused of violently beating an Uber driver before robbing him. The two suspects who have been apprehended are aged 15 and 16; their identities have not been released to the public. Police are seeking two other individuals who they believe were involved in the attack. (CBS Philly)
- Police are investigating a shooting in the Carroll Park neighborhood of Philadelphia. Early Tuesday morning, police responded to a call reporting gunshots near the 1500 block of Edgewood Street. A man was found suffering from a gunshot wound; the hospital has since listed him as being in stable condition. Officers are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.
