Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:
- The Opioid Crisis worsened in Philadelphia since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Kensington-based Prevention Point. The nonprofit reports that over 10 million used syringes were collected through a 12-month period during community cleanups. The organization only distributed 8.8 million syringes during the period. The number of individuals seeking medication treatment for opioid use disorder rose by 845 percent during the last three years. (PhillyVoice.com)
- The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Rob Thomson for a two-year deal. Thomson took over as interim manager after Joe Girardi was dismissed during a team collapse in the middle of the 2022 season. The deal was announced on the heels of the Phillies' playoff upset over the St. Louis Cardinals. (Patch)
- Philadelphia homeowners now have until Dec. 2 to submit applications for property assessment reviews. Despite the extension, the city is still encouraging property owners to consider programs such as the Homestead Exemption program, the Longtime Owner Occupants Program, and the Senior Citizen Tax Freeze program. City Council and city officials are hoping that the extension will allow residents to be taxed fairly by providing accurate property assessment. (Pennsylvania Capital-Star)
