Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:
- A former Philadelphia police officer accused of shooting and killing a 12-year-old, Thomas Siderio, had murder charges held in court Tuesday. Edsaul Mendoza, 26, of Philadelphia, was charged with first- and third- degree murder, as well as voluntary manslaughter and possession of instrument of crime, charges filed against him held for court. After the victim fired a single shot at an unmarked police car, officers fired twice at Siderio and Mendoza fired an additional two times as the boy ran away, killing him. (Philadelphia Patch)
- A Northeast Philadelphia pharmacy owner has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison along with $4 million for filling false oxycodone prescriptions. Mitchell Spivack, 63, was also for insurance fraud. Verree Pharmacy in Fox Chase developed a reputation as a “no questions asked” pharmacy for oxycodone and other opioids. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
- Philadelphia police have identified a suspect in a shooting of five high school football players. According to police, Dayron Burney-Thorn, 16, is considered armed and dangerous. There is a $45,000 reward from the city and the Fraternal Order of Police for his arrest and conviction. Nicolas Elizalde, 14, was killed in the shooting, and four other players were injured leaving a scrimmage at Roxborough High School on Sep. 27 around 4:40 p.m. (WGAL Susquehanna Valley Pa.)
