Philly is not only where New Yorkers consider moving to most, it's also where most people moving to New York are from, a new study shows.

PHILADELPHIA — If Philadelphia is looking more crowded than in the past several years, that's because New Yorkers are looking to relocate to the City of Brotherly Love.
StreetEasy.com recently released a list of cities from which people are moving into New York City.
However, the findings also included a list of the cities where New Yorkers want to move.

But ironically, Philadelphia was also No. 1 on the list of cities from which people want to move to the New York City area.
"There’s something about the City of Brotherly Love that has its residents looking to trade their big city for an even bigger one," the website reads. "Though we have to admit, as the number one destination where New Yorkers are searching (and one of Zillow’s hottest markets of 2025), Philly must have some great things to offer — primarily its $1,700 typical asking rent and $256,000 median asking price."
Redfin, however, recently listed Philadelphia among the most expensive metro areas for renters.
In 2024, the median rent price in Philadelphia, requiring a median income of $74,600 to support that rental cost. The estimated median income of renters in Philadelphia is $58,970, a nearly 21 percent difference in the estimated required median income and estimated earned median income.
Still, it's cheaper than New York City, which required an estimated median income of $112,200 for its $2,805 median rental asking price.
Philadelphia was No. 9 on Redfin's list of the most expensive cities for renting, while New York City was No. 3, behind only Miami and Providence, Rhode Island.
