Bringing Fish Back to the Schuylkill

The Philadelphia Water Department is working to make the Schuylkill a home for shad.

Grid magazine has a pretty cool piece about how the Philadelphia Water Department is working to bring fish back to the Schuylkill River. It's answer? Make it easier for the fish to spawn, via special "fishways."

From Grid:

It is a type of “fish ladder,” a series of switchbacks that zigzag back and forth, like shallow steps, transforming the steep climb and surging waters of a dam or waterfall into a gradual rise and a gentler, more shad-friendly current.
