Brrr! Wind, Cold and Snow Arrive

Roads are slippery, flights are delayed, and there's a chance more snow is coming.

The first snowfall of 2015 arrived Tuesday, and brought with it brutal cold and slippery roads.

Temperatures were in the teens Tuesday morning, but it felt about 5 degrees colder with the wind chill, the National Weather Service said. Steady winds of about 6 mph were blowing.

Total accumulation of about 2 inches is expected, with snowfall stopping around 3 p.m. Tuesday. There is a chance of snow again Wednesday, the NWS said. Winds will be significantly stronger Wednesday, with speeds reaching up to 23 mph by afternoon.

Roads were slippery throughout the region Tuesday morning, with multiple reports of minor accidents and spinouts.

“When winter weather hits, we’ll work around the clock, but remember our goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow,” the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said, reminding drivers to stay six car lengths back from an operating snow plow. PennDOT also urged people to allow extra travel time.

Philadelphia International Airport was reporting delays of several hours Tuesday morning. Passengers and those meeting flights are advised to call 1.800.PHL.GATE to check on flight status before departing for the airport.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6. “A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties,” the National Weather Service said. “Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.”
