More Bridgework Planned Around Phoenixville

As commuters begin to settle into their new reality of life with detours around the Route 23 Valley Forge Bridge project, a new wrinkle has been added to the regional traffic picture.

As part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s plan to improve U.S 422 and its interchange at Route 724 in Lower Pottsgrove, the ramp from Route 724 to U.S. 422 east will close on Friday, May 8, for the construction of a new ramp and for the reconstruction of the eastbound side of the U.S. 422 bridge over the Schuylkill River.

Following the ramp closure, PennDOT’s contractor will demolish and rebuild this section of the U.S. 422 bridge over the Schuylkill River, and construct a new entrance ramp on a new alignment at Route 724.

These operations are part of the $73.3 million project to rebuild Route 422 between the Sanatoga and Route 724 interchanges. The new bridge and realigned ramp are expected to be completed in March 2018.

During construction, the posted detour for Route 724 motorists to follow to reach U.S. 422 east is to take U.S. 422 west to the Route 100 Interchange, then exit at the ramp for Route 100 south and take the ramp to U.S. 422 east. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel along the detour route.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
