PA Turnpike Tolls Increased 5 Percent Sunday

The increase will go to funding the Pennsylvania transit systems.

VALLEY FORGE, PA —The Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls increased by 5 percent at 12:01 a.m. Sunday for all E-ZPass and Toll-By-Plate customers.

The most common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase next year from $1.80 to $1.90.For those with E-ZPasses, the increase will go from $4.40 to $4.70.

The increase will provide PennDOT supplemental funding for transit systems.

Mark Compton, CEO of the Turnpike Commission, said that payments to PennDOT are $50 million a year, noting the goal is to get to a 3 percent increase by 2028.

PennDOT recommends that motorists use the E-Z Pass to save money on tolls. The passes are available at retail establishments. The locations are available by checking here.

The turnpike also reminded drivers that Pennsylvania law allows the commissioner to work with PennDOT to suspend motor-vehicle registrations of owners with four or more overdue plate invoices or $250 or more in unpaid tolls or outstanding toll invoices.

Traffic volume report

The Turnpike Commission reports that commercial traffic volumes are up 14.5 percent versus pre-pandemic levels.

In addition, the commission reports passenger traffic is about 95 percent of the pre-pandemic peak with customers reporting their choice to travel the turnpike is based on safety, convenience, and responsiveness to their roadway needs.

A new billing system coming

The Turnpike Commission is in the process of implementing a new open roadway tolling, which is a cashless system without toll booths. Tolls will be charged electronically with a toll system set above the road that will begin in 2025.

Payments will be collected by E-Z Pass deductions, or mailed to the driver. The cost will be higher to mail a bill than to use an E-Z Pass.
